SR 417 Widening from John Young Parkway

Client:
Central Florida Expressway
Location:
Orlando, Florida
Service:
Transportation Engineering
Project Overview
This project widens of approximately 3.75 miles of the SR 417 mainline from 4 to 6 through lanes from just east of John Young Pkwy (JYP) to Just east of Landstar Blvd. Four interchanges (JYP, US 441, Florida’s Turnpike and Landstar Blvd). This project provides inside shoulder in each direction that will be built to full depth pavement that can be utilized as an additional travel lane for special part time use. The project includes widening of SR 417 mainline bridges over US 441, Balcombe Road, Florida’s Turnpike, orange Avenue, FDOT Railroad and Landstar Blvd, as well as widening of SR 417 SB off-ramp to US-441. To accommodate the new traffic demand created by the soon to be completed systems interchange between SR 417 and Florida’s Turnpike, additional operational improvements are being incorporated into this project to eliminate or minimize weaves.

These additional improvements include the aforementioned ramp bridge widening at OBT to achieve proper lane balance, and the introduction of a braided ramp in the SR 417 northbound direction to eliminate the weave between the Turnpike on-ramp and the Landstar Blvd. off-ramp. In addition, an exclusive continuous auxiliary lane is being added in the northbound direction between the JYP and OBT interchanges to improve gap acceptance for both merging and exiting traffic movements. Project also includes milling and resurfacing of existing pavement and upgrading existing guardrails to meet new height requirement.
