Project Overview
Moffatt & Nichol (M&N) was retained for the planning, permitting, and design of the redevelopment of the north yard at RMK Merrill Stevens. RMK Merrill-Stevens is a full-service shipyard on the Miami River in Miami, Florida dedicated to the refit and repair of the world’s finest yachts and vessels. The 6-acre north yard parcel is being redeveloped to support a new ship lift from Pearlson Shiplift Corporation with a 2,700-ton capacity to service vessels up to 230 feet in length. M&N completed the design of the marine and upland structures, drainage system, and site grading, and managed the design of the site electrical, lighting, sanitary sewer, fire protection and domestic water utilities for the shipyard along with marine pedestals along the waterfront. The marine and upland structures included perimeter bulkheads, shiplift foundation, and upland transfer berths. The An integrated stormwater management system was designed to collect and treat the shipyard’s runoff for discharge into treatment wells. Site grading was designed to raise the grades above the FEMA flood elevation. M&N prepared environmental permit applications for the project for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management. A phased-permit approach was developed to facilitate early construction of certain components including the upland transfer berths and shiplift hoist sheet piling. A submerged lands lease through FDEP was also obtained for the waterfront marginal docking areas along the bulkheads.
