During Hurricane Sandy, the City of Fort Lauderdale’s iconic Wave Wall was undermined by the waves generated by the storm, and resulted in the undermining of SR A1A. The Wave Wall is a flowing, swirling wall that extends along SR AIA and supports a brick paved promenade that includes pillar framed entrances to the City’s world-famous beach. EAC designed a new wall that replicated the damaged wall but included a foundation that would protect the wall, the beach shoreline, and the roadway from future events.
The new wall foundation utilized steel sheet piles, which were embedded below grade and out of sight. The design allowed for the reconstruction of the iconic wall and promenade to its original appearance and provided the resiliency protection to the roadway and shoreline.
